A Lonely Rowboat

by Duncan Jones

A lonely rowboat skims across

A black and still night sea

And in the wind he hears his name

It calls, “Come back to me ...”

He sees their eyes as dark as night

But he never can be sure

And so he rows when the sea is calm

And goes in search of her

I hear the wind it calls my name

"Come swimming in the sea

Before I go, though, I must know

Will you come swim with me?”

His tale goes back, one stormy night

Another ship taken by waves

One of few who escapes his fate

One of few who are ever saved

So life went on he met a girl

With hair and eyes like night

For both of them, as everyone says

Was true love at first sight

I hear the wind it calls my name

"Come swimming in the sea ..."

Before I go, though, I must know

Will you come swim with me?

And he always said to everyone

That he couldn’t ask for more

But he always felt before they met

That they had met before

Sometimes when a sea breeze came

He would catch her barely sigh

And sometimes she would watch the sea

With sadness in her eyes

I hear the wind it calls my name

"Come swimming in the sea ..."

Before I go, though, I must know

Will you come swim with me?

But she’d look away and never say

When the wind would call her name

And though she tried to put aside

The sea called her all the same

He found one day when he came home

Her note up upon the bed

And then knew, the legends true

Her note to him it read

I hear the wind it calls my name

"Come swimming in the sea ..."

Before I go, though, I must know

Will you come swim with me?

So a lonely rowboat swims across

A black and still night sea

And in the wind he hears his name

It calls, “Come back to me ...”

He sees their eyes as dark as night

But he never can be sure

And so he rows when the sea is calm

And goes in search of her

I hear the wind it calls my name

"Come swimming in the sea ..."

Before I go, though, I must know

Will you come swim with me?

A shipwrecked sailor is saved by a seal. Later in life he meets/marries her (she’s taken human form as legends say some do). She knows though that one day she will have to return to the sea. He doesn’t realize where they had met until he finds the note, so he goes looking for her. He has no way to be sure of who she is though so he will forever be searching for her.
