Anthem Of The Scavengers

by Duncan Jones

A lost gazelle who’s been run out by the buffalo and the wildebeest and the zebras meets a questionable vulture who keeps the company of some other questionables. He gives her some questionable advice …

It hurts to feel ignored and not included

I used to ask them all, “Can I come play?”

I begged, and I implored, but I was deluded

Looking back … every day was not my day

With time to spare I learned to fly, yes I did

And now they see me in the sky, decided

We never made amends, so no, we are not friends

Though when we meet again I’ll be delighted …

They consider me symbol of such negativities

They never called my name, how I wanted

Conveniently forgotten out of all festivities

Now if they make it through the night their days are haunted

For soon enough they’ll learn what lies ahead …

When I swoop down upon their end and final bed

Some curse, some apologize, when they look into my eyes

“Either way,” I say, “I’m gonna eat you when you’re dead!”

I don’t care what you say now

I don’t care what’s been said

The only thing I care about

Is what time you’ll be dead

Don’t care for who you used to be

Whether nice or one to dread

The only thing I care about now

Is eating you when you’re dead

Perhaps it was my striking, stunning features

As if created by some lunatic cartoonist

Meant to scavenge, they call us lowly creatures

But on my resumé my title’s “opportunist”

So one day I chose to choose to not feel slighted

And look forward to the time when we’re united

Now when they are no longer, we’re together, and I’m stronger

So when I see the slightest limp I get excited

The hyena’s always laughing because she gets the bigger joke

She’s been called a coward, thief, but she is clever

The crocodile is smiling because he meets a lot of folk

They come in for a drink and stay forever

Come take a walk among the nasty born and bred

Certain skins and reputations can’t be shed

Darling, do you get my gist? Some names are just not on the list

But that’s ok, we’ll eat them when they’re dead

We don’t care what you say now

We don’t care what’s been said

The only thing we care about

Is what time you’ll be dead

Don’t care for who you used to be

Whether nice or one to dread

The only thing we care about now

Is eating you when you’re dead

When you find yourself alone in life and sad

And it feels as though you’re universe is cursed

Just look down on all the others and be glad

There’s a good chance someone else is dying first

When the herds are gone and no one has been fed

When it’s so hot with such mirages they’re misled

When the night has left the grasses dark and red

We show up and eat them when they’re dead

We don’t care what you say now

We don’t care what’s been said

The only thing we care about

Is what time you’ll be dead

Don’t care for who you used to be

Whether nice or one to dread

The only thing we care about now

Is eating you when you’re dead

Yes we’ll always have enough

Our life is great when times are tough

Because …

We’re the ones who eat you when you’re dead

I’ve never chased or fought or bled

I’d rather sit and wait instead

Because …

We’re the ones who eat you when you’re dead

Sweetness, spend some time with me

And you’ll always eat for free

Because …

We’re the ones who eat you when you’re dead

We turn your dark sky grayer

We are no one’s answered prayer

Because …

We’re the ones who eat you when you’re dead

Just hope you have an appetite

For the most disgusting things in sight

Because …

We’re the ones who eat you when you’re dead
