The Mail Carrier

by Duncan Jones

A certainly uncertain time

Had fallen on the land

And the people, when they met

No longer shook each other's hand

The daily lives had changed

But not for her, she wasn't most

She held the route and kept it on

Continued with her post

And when TV networks warned

And the wind did carry fear

Still every day with naught but calm

On time she would appear

Then off into the distance

As so many days before

A hope, "Our time's not over lads

We've plenty time to score!"

And when the birds of Twitter chirped

"Tweet, tweet, we're gonna die!"

She passed the windows of the homes

"Nay, nay, not you, not I.

The world's alive, I carry proof

Stay safe, be not dismayed

For every parcel, envelope

Is something someone made!"

And when the echo chambers called

And politics did yell

She was the leader leading well

With not a thing to sell

Then down the road, a metronome

A reminder, "We'll survive!

The world will keep on turning

And the letters must arrive!"

So one day many years from now

When the tales are all retold

Let's make sure this is among them

Let us celebrate the bold ...

In a time, no hugs nor handshakes

When the world had lost its beat

She kept it all connected

And she did it with her feet!
